Dental Implants

A dental implant is a surgical fixture that is placed into the jawbone to replace a missing tooth or teeth. It serves as a foundation for a crown, bridge, or denture, providing a natural-looking and permanent solution for tooth loss.

Components of a Dental Implant:

  1. Implant Post (Titanium Screw): The implant post is a small titanium screw that is surgically placed into the jawbone. Titanium is used because it is biocompatible, meaning it fuses well with bone tissue in a process called osseointegration.
  2. Abutment: After the implant post fuses with the bone, an abutment (a connector) is placed on top of the implant. The abutment serves as the attachment point for the artificial tooth or teeth.
  3. Restoration (Crown, Bridge, or Denture): The final part is the visible tooth or teeth (such as a crown, bridge, or denture) that is attached to the abutment. This restoration is custom-made to match the colour and appearance of your natural teeth.

Steps of the Dental Implant Procedure:

  1. Consultation and Planning: The dentist will evaluate your overall health, oral health, and bone structure to determine if you’re a good candidate for an implant. A Cone Beam CT scan (3D X-ray) scan is an essential investigation to help with this planning process. We have this equipment at Fairoaks Dental Surgery;
  2. Implant Placement: During the surgery, the dentist or surgeon will place the titanium post into the jawbone under local anesthesia. In some cases, sedation may also be used. After the post is placed, the healing process begins, which can take several months, as the bone fuses with the implant post;
  3. Abutment Placement: Once the implant is securely integrated with the bone, the abutment is placed. At this stage, the gum tissue is healed, and a temporary restoration might be used while the final restoration is crafted;
  4. Restoration Placement: After the gums have healed around the abutment, the final crown, bridge, or denture is attached to the abutment. This restoration is customized to match the surrounding natural teeth and looks and functions like a real tooth.

Benefits of Dental Implants:

  • Natural Appearance: Implants look and feel like natural teeth, offering a seamless result.
  • Durability: With proper care, dental implants can last a lifetime, unlike other restorative options like bridges or dentures that may need to be replaced.
  • Improved Functionality: Unlike removable dentures, dental implants provide stable support for eating and speaking, improving overall comfort and confidence.
  • Preservation of Bone: Dental implants help preserve the jawbone structure, preventing bone loss that often occurs when teeth are missing.
  • No Impact on Adjacent Teeth: Unlike dental bridges, which require reshaping adjacent teeth, implants do not impact the surrounding teeth.

Full Arch Implant Rehabilitation

Dental Implants can also be used to hold and support a full arch of teeth if necessary. In most cases these are fixed teeth that are attached to multiple implants. In some cases implants are used to help support and hold removeable dentures.

There is even a process whereby all missing teeth are removed and a bridge is made and fitted while you wait (e.g. Same Day Teeth or All on ‘x’ techniques).

Are You a Candidate for Dental Implants?

Most people in good health and with sufficient jawbone volume/density are candidates for dental implants. However, if you have certain medical conditions (e.g. uncontrolled diabetes), severe gum disease or you are a heavy smoker, you may need to address those issues before getting implants.

Dental implants are a highly effective solution for restoring missing teeth and improving oral health and appearance. If you’re considering them, a consultation with a dentist at Fairoaks Dental Surgery will help you understand if implants are the best choice for you!

Some Important FAQ

It is a surgical process to restore missing teeth/tooth with full form and function, improving your dental health, as well as your smile and confidence. A dental implant is a titanium screw placed directly into the jawbone. Over time, it fuses with the bone and functions as an artificial tooth root. It is used to support replacement crowns, bridges, and removable dentures.

If most or all of the teeth need replacement, patients can benefit from the innovative All-on-4 or All-on-6 treatments, which provide a replacement arch of teeth with only four to six implants in total.

The treatment is used to replace one or more missing teeth. Without teeth to provide structure, the jaw bone starts to resorb gradually. Traditional solutions for missing teeth and bone loss include removable dentures, or fixed bridges.

However, dentures can be uncomfortable, sore and unstable, while fitting bridges involves filing down healthy teeth to make room. Tooth implant in London, on the other hand, is strong, durable, and look and feel just like natural teeth.

They are safe and carried out every day in surgeries all over the world. The detailed examination of your oral and overall health will ensure that you are suitable for the treatment and that it is safe for you to have the tooth implant surgery.

You may be a suitable candidate for implants if one, some, or all of your teeth are:

  • Missing (or about to go missing)
  • Lose
  • Decayed
  • Cracked or broken
  • Damaged

Absolutely Yes! The first thing that people see is your smile and if you have broken or missing teeth this can have a major impact on your appearance and the way you feel about it. Your confidence will be restored to the level it was before you had those oral imperfections. There is no substitute for a great smile!

  • All-on-four/All-on-six

    It is a technique that involves fixing 4 or 6 implants to support the prosthesis with its weight bearing ability. This permanent tooth reconstruction process is well documented for its pleasing and long-lasting results. You will immediately experience the restored smile and oral health which could even last for a average of a decade on proper maintenance.

  • Bone Grafting

    In this process, the height and thickness of the bone is increased to help the implants fit perfectly in the area. This helps the surgeon to insert the artificial root for the patients having severe health problems like diabetes and cardiac problems. The procedure can be carried out under both local anaesthesia and conscious sedation to allow the patient feel least discomfort and stress during the surgery.

  • Bone Grafting with Bio guide Membrane

    During this process, an absorbable plastic layer is applied to initiate bone regeneration and healing. It also protects the tissues and bone exposed during the technique. The synthetic layers remain active for months and then the body enzymes absorb it. It does not cause any irritation or infection in the hard or soft tissues.

  • PRGF

    It is an advanced process performed in using the patient’s own blood plasma and a membrane to aid better healing of bone defects. It also acts as a replacement for the area of missing bone required during installation of the artificial root.

  • Sinus Elevation – Mini Sinus Elevation

    The process is performed before the tooth restoration surgery with an intention to increase the thickness and volume of the insufficient bone in the upper arch. The patient feels minimum pain and stress during the surgery because he/she is kept under local anaesthesia and conscious sedation throughout the treatment process. The implants are usually installed straight away during the same appointment.
